Shot three kids, one mom Why no death-sentence?

People are going to read the accompanying story on this front page about the coldblooded brutal murder of 19-year-old Stephanie Gonzalez and ask – “A plea bargain for rape and murder? Are you kidding me?” And yet, getting a death-penalty conviction in Hidalgo County is anything but easy. Even in a case when the murderer admits to what he did and begs the state to kill him. Such was the case approximately three years ago involving Roberto Rojas. A married man and father with an explosive temper and a terrible jealous streak, Rojas went on a killing rampage in December of 2008. His victims? His mother-in-law and three children, ages two, six and eight. The twoyear- old was his biological son. The older children, his stepsons.
