San Juan run-off election leads to early lawsuit

SAN JUAN – The runoff election for the city of San Juan’s Place 5 seat between incumbent Pedro “Pete” Garcia and his opponent, Marco “Markie” Villegas, kicked into high gear this week when the latter’s attorney, Javier Peña, filed a temporary restraining order (TRO) at the Hidalgo County Courthouse Tuesday, which was subsequently signed the same day by state District Court Judge Rose Guerra Reyna. A temporary injunction is scheduled for June 10th.

What has Villegas so upset that he would resort to legal action against Garcia is tied to a political flyer distributed, beginning last week, by the Garcia campaign via social media. According to Villegas, the flyer was also distributed throughout parts of the city by other means as well (stuffing them into mail boxes).

The flyer has a photo of Villegas, and then beneath it, the words: Educated? Trustworthy? Professional?”
