The med school will get a check
They had a workshop where they heard from about it and a regular meeting where they voted to do it. The ‘it’ is a $1 million donation to the new medical school at UTRGV and McAllen city commissioners voted unanimously to give the school $1m toward research and Mayor Jim Darling will present the check late Wednesday afternoon at the grand opening of the Biomedical Research Building.
The freshly constructed facility is at 5300 North L Street, northeast of Jackson Rd. and East Dove. That’s in McAllen and it there university and medical school professors have expressed hope of medical advances. Commissioners were briefed on ,medical school progress at their regular 4 pm workshop and then voted to give the money in their meeting but not before a little discussion.
Commissioner Javier Villalobos started things off by asking why, since the $1 million gift is in the budget, commissioners have to vote on it? Because that’s the way previous commissioners had wanted it, explained City Manager Roy Rodriguez.
