McAllen ranked as having lowest cost of living by Economic Think Tank

Editor’s note: McAllen gets the congratulatory nod in this ranking, but by extension, this number-one listing most likely includes all of Hidalgo County if indeed the rankings are based on Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). The local MSA is listed as McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, which actually includes all of Hidalgo County, despite the MSA name. For years, Harlingen was ranked number one, but now the McAllen urban area has surpassed it. That’s good news for all county residents, actually, because even though our poverty rate is indeed high, at least the cost of living is low. And for that, we can be thankful.
 
McALLEN — The City of McAllen was recently ranked as having the lowest Cost of Living Index amongst 261 participating urban areas by C2ER – The Council for Community and Economic Research, an economic think tank in its last quarterly report. The rankings for the Cost of Living Index, which is the after-tax cost for a professional/managerial standard of living ranged from more than twice the national average in New York (Manhattan) NY to almost 25 percent below the national average in McAllen, TX.
