It’s become a cliché: “Her smile and cheerful spirit are so infectious.”

In the case of Kasey, however, the cliché is indeed reality. It only takes a few minutes talking to her to realize that. What’s more surprising, though, is that you soon realize that the woman to whom you’re speaking is basically homeless, was born without a right arm, suffers from other handicaps, escaped an abusive relationship, had her truck and food-vendor trailer stolen from her, is pan handling to save up enough money to get her life back on track, and only recently escaped a motel fire that almost killed her.

Yet, she is still smiling, giving thanks to both God and the kind people with whom she crosses paths on a daily basis as she stands near an expressway corner near McAllen/ Pharr. She’s also in love with her dog, Loca, who she credits with saving her life last July 2nd when a fire broke out in a motel in McAllen where she was staying for the night.

“It’s true,” she said. “If Loca hadn’t woken me up, I’d be dead.”
