Good luck at state, Brittany
This week she travels to Austin – same town where the lobbyists buy lunch and dinner for the legislators -- to compete in the UIL track and field state championships. Vielma’s claim to fame: the discus and shot put. Not for the weak bodied. Both the shot put and discus are ancient sports, with one going all the way back to the days of the ancient Greeks. The discus is the older of the two and was actually part of the ancient Olympic Games dating back to 684 BC. Older than Hillary Clinton (JK). But unlike the former first lady, although some Republicans would even argue this point, the discus was made of stone. The shot put, on the other hand, has its origins in the ancient Scottish Highlands, and dates back to approximately the first century. In any event, pardon the pun, we wish Brittany Vielma the very best this week in state competition. And no matter how it ends, she’s already proven herself a winner simply through the hard work and dedication that has brought her this far. Last month, Vielma signed a letter of intent to throw the shot and discus at Northern Arizona University.
