Geovani Hernandez federal drug trial set for December

Four years ago, Geovani Hernandez was the La Joya police chief talking about what a dent he and his department were making, taking down drug traffickers. He was a smooth talker.

When former Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño was sentenced in July 2014 to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to money laundering, the local Democrat Party precinct chairs met to choose someone to replace him. In that original group running for a spot in the special November 2014 election, however, stood then La Joya Police Chief Geovani Hernandez. He had run against Treviño for sheriff in the 2012 Democratic Primary, claiming that the Valley was “infested with drug cartels,” and that Treviño was doing little to combat the problem.

The day of the precinct vote, however, Hernandez walked into the Dem meeting and announced that he was withdrawing
