40-year-old Advance News gets new design
Forty years ago a tiny little eight-page newspaper appeared in PSJA out of nowhere, originally titled The San Juan Advance. How fast time flies. My parents owned it for 15 years, and now my wife and I have owned it for 25 years. The only difference between how the paper is run, besides the name change (The Advance News Journal) is the approach to local news that my step-dad had vs. my approach. He always viewed the glass as half full. I tend to view it as half empty. His goal was to publish a good-news newspaper. He thought that’s what people wanted – good news. I agree with that to some extent, but the bad news can’t be ignored because there is certainly enough to go around. There are shoppers that only contain “fluff,” and then there are real newspapers. The trick is finding the right balance.
Before I get into the new news – The Advance is getting a new design, a completely new look to come next week – I should offer my condolences to the family of Louis H. Jones, who was the head of Dannebaum’s South Texas operations. According to several well-placed sources, Jones shot himself to death Monday night. Details of the where, exactly when, haven’t yet been released to the media (Tuesday afternoon).
