RUBEN SERNA
PHARR - Ruben Serna, 90, died Sunday, October 7, 2018, at Paxvilla Hospice in McAllen.
Born in San Juan he lived there most of his life. He served his country during War World II as a Corporal in the United States Army. Mr. Serna was one of the first Hispanics who served on the PSJA school board from 1963 to 1965 and was a member of Woodmen of the World. He also served in the Hidalgo County Regional Mobility Authority board from 2005 to 2011 and retired from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Librada “Lee” Serna”; his parents, Ramon and Matiana Serna; two sisters, Minerva Cazares and Rebecca Luna; and his son-in-law, Gabriel Michael Rodriguez.
Ruben is survived by his five children, Dahlia (Jesse) Mandujano, Cynthia (George) Castaneda, both of Schertz, TX, Sandra Serna of Houston, Laura Lee (Rene) Ramirez of Pharr, Dr. Patricia (Robbin Nelson) Serna of Houston; nine grandchildren, Melissa, Audrey, Eric, Brian, Aaron, Anthony, Ryan, Lauren, Rene Lee; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Raquel Suarez of Hammond, IN.
The family would like to thank Socorro Hernandez, Angel Hernandez, and all the staff from Paxvilla for the care given to their father.
Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 7473 of Elsa.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
