Pharr - Erasmo Benavidez, age 88, died Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Pax Villa Hospice in McAllen. He was born on August 11, 1926 in McAllen. Mr. Benavidez worked for Valley Fruit Company and other packing sheds in the valley for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Juanita Benavidez., his late wife, Eliza R. Benavidez and a sister, Emma Benavidez. He is survived by his sisters, Elva (Frank) Mendiola of McAllen, Elisena (Hector) Vasquez of San Juan, Juanita (Agapito, Jr.) Garza of Pharr, Olivia Benavidez, a brother, Alonso Benavidez of Pharr, several nieces and nephews, two sons, Eduardo and Bobby Benavidez and two daughters, Sonia and Gina Benavidez. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Josie R. (Oscar) Cantu and their family, Lisa Cantu and her daughters, Alexa (Scott) Steadham and Annalysa Salinas; Oscar Cantu, Jr. (Araceli) and their son, Oscar III and JC Cantu from California. He was an active member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church where he served for 25 years as a Eucharistic Minister, CCD Teacher and Choir Member. In the last 10 years, Mr. Benavidez had been a residen of the Alfredo Gonzalez Nursing Home, and Residents' President for six years. Our thanks to Everyone there as well as his faithful friend and care giver, Idalia Mendiola and her children, Cassie and Alex, whom Erasmo loved dearly. Visitation was held June 12, 2015 at Skinner Silva Funeral Chapel on West Sam Houston in Pharr. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St Margaret's Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment with military honors followed at the RGV State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Funeral Services were entrusted to the care of Skinner Silva Funeral Home of Pharr.
