Happy Birthday to our amazing son
On behalf of my wife and I, we wish our son a very happy 32nd birthday this week. The picture you see here was taken back in 1993 when he graduated from kindergarten in May of that year. The first day I picked up from kindergarten the previous August, he said, leaning on the door so I couldn’t pry his hands loose, “I can’t leave yet, dad.”
“Why not?”
“Because I haven’t learned how to read yet.”
Actually, he could read by then, but not as well as he wanted.
Hard to say how proud I am of the man (husband and dad) he has become. He turns 32 (hard to believe), and I can still remember the first time the nurse taught me how to change a diaper. The brain really is amazing for its ability to store memories, photographic images. I was telling him yesterday now that he’s only four months away from finishing his three-year gastroenterology fellowship that if he counted up all the time he spent in college (Baylor), med school (San Antonio), three years residence in Internal Medicine in Louisville, and the last three years spent in Louisville finishing a three-year gastro fellowship, all of that actually added up to 14 years of school AFTER graduating in the top 20 of his high school class with two high school diplomas, one of which is an IB diploma.
