Choosing Justices

Liberals were shocked when Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement. Kennedy has been the swing vote in many recent cases. Although originally selected by Ronald Reagan, he has tended to vote with liberals on social issues while siding with conservatives on economic matters. Liberals are concerned that his successor will vote with conservatives down the line which could trigger a reexamination of Roe vs. Wade. The President says, however, that he will merely choose a justice who will defend the original meaning of the Constitution. He says he will not have a pro-life litmus test because his advisers have assured him such a test would be inappropriate. Trump’s enemies don’t believe him.
