PHARR - John Michael Koperwas, 92, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at McAllen Medical Center. He was born on Feb 19, 1922 to Nicholas & Nelly Koperwas in Alpena, Michigan. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He retired in 1984 after 27 years of employment from the Abitibi Corp of Alpena, MI and then moved to Texas. He was a devoted catholic and served for over 10 years as an alter server at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Pharr. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #12776 in Pharr and had been a resident of the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Elizabeth, Wanda, Victoria & Florence and by two brothers, Florain & Carl. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Pilar Pandal Koperwas of Pharr, sister in law, Elnorene Koperwas and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held on Sunday, June 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Skinner Silva Funeral Chapel in Pharr with a Holy Rosary recited at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, June 9, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment with military honors officiated by the VFW, Post 8788 of McAllen followed at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen. Funeral services were entrusted to the care of Skinner-Silva Funeral Home of Pharr.
