Healthcare District
By G. Romero Wendorf
The battle over passage of the Hidalgo County Healthcare District, which will be on this November’s ballot, is starting to be reminiscent of the Pharr municipal election last year.
How so?
In 2015, one of the charges made against Ambrosio “Amos” Hernandez, MD, was that he was serving as a frontman for business tycoon Alonzo Cantu so that a county healthcare/hospital district would pass the next time it was put on a ballot.
After all, it failed by a narrow margin in 2014.
The implication being that if the new healthcare taxing district gets passed, it will benefit one of Cantu’s most prized business ventures, DHR (Doctors Hospital at Renaissance).
What was missing in that scenario was that every hospital in Hidalgo County, not just DHR, was pushing for its passage in 2014, as is the case this time around in 2016. So its hoped-for passage in 2014 was a county hospital thing, not just a DHR/Alonzo Cantu thing.
