Why did Edinburg City Manager stay put and turn away bigger hospital offer? Mayor, city councilman spar
EDINBURG – The Advance News Journal broke the story in April – Edinburg’s new city manager, Juan Guerra, would take a job with DHR Health (Doctors Hospital at Renaissance). Time to retract the story – he’s not leaving Edinburg after all.
Question is why? He was making, at the time, $225,000 per year as Edinburg’s CM, and DHR was offering him a lot more money to come work for it in an executive management capacity working alongside its CEO. How much more money/benefits were being offered was never made public, but it was “substantial,” according to several sources in the know. DHR’s policy is not to comment on employment matters.
The city of Edinburg council majority voted June 28th by a 3-1 margin to increase Guerra’s salary to $250,000, still short of DHR’s offer, according to the same sources, but a $25,000 pay hike nonetheless.
Mayor Richard Molina calls it a great thing for the city; his public nemesis, Councilman Gilbert Enriquez, calls it simply another example of a lack of transparency on the part of the council majority.
