Weslaco police chief resigns

WESLACO -- The City of Weslaco will soon be short a police chief after Stephen Scott Mayer steps down from his post effective next Monday, Dec. 31. In his place, longtime Weslaco PD Captain Robert De La Cerda will serve as interim chief until Mayer’s replacement can be named. The city is expected to begin its search for a new police chief after the first of the new year, according to Weslaco City Manager Mike Perez.
Mayer tendered his resignation dated Dec. 11, which read:
“I am writing to notify you that I am resigning from my position as Chief of Police with the Weslaco Police Department. My last day of employment will be Dec. 31, 2017.
