Cyberspace seems to be a great place to hang out if you lack any morals and/or scruples. No, I’m not talking about a D.C. politician hooking up online with someone named “Kitty” before taking a nude selfie and storing it on the Cloud. Hello, former New York U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner.

Instead, think money. Think holding up an entire city – and/or cities -- demanding they pay you a ransom or else all city data will be deleted from city servers. You can steal money without a gun, without kidnapping anyone, and your chances of getting caught, thanks mainly to Bitcoin and the online world, are slim to none.

According to a Texas state press release made public last week by the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR), 22 Texas cities recently experienced “ransomware.”
