Dash-cam video still missing from Mission mayor’s accident
By Gregg Romero Wendorf
MISSION – Longtime Mission Mayor Norberto “Beto” Salinas has categorically denied, contrary to rumors being bandied about during this runoff election cycle, that his auto accident at approximately 3:30 a.m. May 5 was related to the consumption of alcohol.
Mission City Manager Martin Garza has confirmed that the mayor phoned him shortly after the accident – the mayor ran off the road and hit a telephone pole – and he detected nothing irregular in the tone of the mayor’s speech (no slurring of words, etc.), and that as far as he is concerned, the mayor received no special treatment from city staff or the Mission PD just because of who he is.
Garza didn’t return three phone messages (three days in a row) requesting comment about the crash until this reporter left a message on the mayor’s cell phone that his city manager wasn’t returning phone calls related to the crash. It was Mayor Salinas, after all, who said call the city manager for confirmation that what he was saying was true – his accident was not alcohol related. It was shortly after the voice mail was left on Mayor Salinas’s cell that City Manager Garza finally phoned. Coincidence, who knows.
