13th Court granted Patterson 8 extensions up until Sept. 14
While Monica Melissa (Palacios) Patterson sits inside her prison cell at the Christina Melton Crain Unit (state female prison not far from Killeen), her appellate attorney, Brandy Wingate Voss, has been busy at work drafting the former hospice executive director’s appellate brief to present to the Texas Thirteenth District Court of Appeals. Based on appellate court records, however, drafting the brief took awhile. Between approximately May 2018 and September 2018, Voss filed approximately eight motions for an extension to file Patterson’s motion for a new trial. Last Friday, however, Voss filed the approximately 96-page “Appellant’s Brief,” and like the one previously filed in the trial court, it stands in direct opposition to the jury’s findings -- guilty on all four counts.
As previously reported in numerous stories in The Advance News Journal, 51-year-old Monica Melissa (Palacios) Patterson was convicted of capital murder last November, along with three other felony counts: theft from a nonprofit; misapplication of a fiduciary;
