There has been considerable talk this week about the United States preparing to impose a twenty percent "border adjustment tax" on goods produced in Mexico and hitting other nations with a thirty-five percent import duty in order to protect the jobs of American workers. Opponents, on the other hand, are raising the specter of the Smoot Hawley Tariff and predicting economic calamity as a likely result of such "protectionism". Where does the truth lie?
