RACHEL IRENE ATWOOD EVINS

EDINBURG - Rachel Irene Atwood Evins, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, December 9, 2017 following a brief illness.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, she truly touched the lives of many. Having taught at the Edinburg School District for 37 years, she shared her gift of reading and language arts with so many children. Her personal studies and quest for knowledge continued well past her retirement, reading, writing and Biblical Scholarly studies. She graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1955.
An avid bridge player, she frequented the Echo Hotel with her many friends playing cards in the afternoons. She had a lust for life and loved God with all her heart. She married the love of her life January 2, 1954, and created a beautiful life for herself and her family. She remained on her family farm for the duration of her life.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Jewel T. and Dewey C. Atwood, her brothers Lambard W. Atwood and Alan C. Atwood.
She is survived by her husband of almost 64 years, James C.H. Evins, daughters Rachel C. Evins (Gordon) Vickers of Kerrville, Gina C. Evins of McAllen, and her son James C. H. “Jay” Evins II (Lourie Dietrich Evins) of Seguin, and three grandchildren, Andrew Taylor Atwood Evins, Christina Ruth Vickers, and Sarah Wesley Godwin
Her surviving siblings include Hazel Grace Atwood Baldridge of Edinburg, her sister Jean T. Atwood Pearce of Alpine, her brother James D. Atwood of Kansas., and her sister-in-law Marcia Miller Atwood Ply (Alan C. Bud)
Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 11, at Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg. Funeral services took place on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m., also at Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
