SAN JUAN – Apolonio R. Montañez, 91, died Friday, June 27, 2014, at Amara Hospice Facility in Edinburg. Born in Mexico, Mr. Montañez had lived in San Juan most of his life. He is preceded in death by his wife, Francisca Colunga Montañez; a son, Juan Montañez; three daughters, Teresa Mendez, Rosa Elia Aguirre, Maria De La Luz Montañez; and two grandsons, Christopher Lee Rosales and Santos Aguirre Jr. Mr. Montañez is survived by nine children, Angela (Jay) Newby, of Palatine, Illinois, Jose (Isabel) Montañez, of San Juan, Francisco (Jade) Montañez, of Waxahachie, Texas, Arturo (Natalia) Montañez, of Lake Jackson, Texas, Janie (Rudy) Serna, of Hillsboro, Texas, Domingo Montañez, of La Marque, Texas, Samuel Montañez, of San Juan, Sylvia (David McLoughlin) Montañez, of Carmel, Indiana, Cynthia Montañez, of Longmont, Colorado; 25 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Sunday, June 29, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Monday, June 30, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment followed at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
