I remember several years ago watching the Iran Contra hearings and seeing Democrats attack Col. Oliver North for using government money to construct a fence around his home. You will recall that Iran Contra involved getting Israel to ship arms to Iran to secure the release of seven hostages. The Israelis then repurchased the weapons systems from the United States. Oliver North was the member of the Security Council that conceived the plan to have Israel transfer some of the money from that sale to the Contra rebels fighting the socialist Sandinistas in Nicaragua. The Boland Amendment had banned the United States from aiding the Contras.
