New police chief lands 12-month contract

WESLACO – When it comes to police chiefs, the city of Weslaco has been rolling snake eyes in recent years. The last police chief it employed only lasted 2.5 years. The one before that lasted only a year before his wad was shot. Granted, a 12- month gig at the PD might not sound stellar, but everything is indeed relative. Just consider, the police chief before that only lasted six months. Call it a case of revolving doors at the Weslaco PD.
So what’s the problem, one might ask? Why can’t Weslaco keep a top cop? Well, you can’t blame it on City Manager Mike Perez. He’s been in Weslaco for three years. When he got there, the police chief’s job was vacant. Under his tenure, the last chief, Scot Mayer, was hired, and then left 2.5 years later. He abruptly resigned last December. The reasons behind his sudden departure have never been made exactly clear, despite Mayer’s letter of resignation and well wishes for the city. Some say he was forced to step down; others disagree.
