Senior Community Outreach Services closes its doors, leading to controversy

ALAMO -- As a news reporter, you live for controversial stories. Somebody screwed up. The question is who? Somewhere in between the two political slates lies the truth. The trick is uncovering it, which is often easier said than done. Such is the case now in Alamo even though the recent municipal election has come and gone.
Two months ago, without warning, the Senior Community Outreach Services (SCOS) closed its doors in Alamo where it’s housed inside the old downtown police station. The city rents it to the nonprofit for $1 per year. At the time of its closing, it had approximately 130 volunteers helping serve the elderly in parts of Willacy, Cameron, and Hidalgo counties. It also had 13 full-time employees.
